What is ADHD-Inattentive Type?

ADHD-Inattentive Type, previously known as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), is one of the three subtypes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This type is characterized primarily by persistent inattention and distractibility, without the hyperactive or impulsive behaviors associated with other forms of ADHD. Individuals with it may struggle with organization, following detailed instructions, maintaining focus on tasks or play activities, and may seem to not listen when spoken to directly.

How does the Inattentive Type differ from other ADHD types?

Inattentive Type differs from the other ADHD presentations mainly in the absence of the hyperactive and impulsive symptoms that define the ADHD-Hyperactive/Impulsive Type and the ADHD-Combined Type. While those with ADHD-Combined Type show both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, and those with ADHD-Hyperactive/Impulsive Type display primarily hyperactive and impulsive behaviors, individuals with the Inattentive Type are primarily challenged by inattention. This can result in significant problems with staying organized, managing time, and following through on tasks.
