ADHD – Hyperactive Type

What is ADHD – Hyperactive Type?

ADHD – Hyperactive Type, also known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation, is a neurological disorder characterized by significant issues with hyperactivity and impulsivity that are not appropriate for a person’s age. Individuals with this type often display a persistent pattern of hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors, which may include fidgeting, difficulty staying seated, excessive talking, and a tendency to make hasty actions without considering potential consequences.

How is the Hyperactive Type different from other forms of ADHD?

ADHD – Hyperactive Type is distinct from other forms of ADHD primarily in the nature of its symptoms. Unlike the Inattentive Type, which is marked by significant attention difficulties without the hyperactive and impulsive behaviors, and the Combined Type, which includes symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity, the Hyperactive Type is characterized mainly by hyperactivity and impulsivity. Individuals with this type do not show significant inattention issues that are characteristic of the other types.

What are the best strategies for managing ADHD – Hyperactive Type?

Managing it effectively requires a comprehensive approach that often combines behavioral strategies, environmental adjustments, and possibly medication. Key strategies include:

  1. Behavioral Interventions: Techniques such as behavior modification therapy or cognitive-behavioral therapy can help individuals learn to control impulsivity and hyperactivity.
  2. Routine and Structure: Establishing a predictable routine and organized environment can help manage symptoms.
  3. Physical Activity: Regular physical exercise can help expend excess energy and improve concentration.
  4. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices like mindfulness can enhance self-regulation and reduce impulsiveness.
  5. Medication: Stimulant medications are commonly used and can be highly effective in reducing hyperactive and impulsive behaviors.
  6. Coaching: Using a combination of strategy instruction, behavioral follow through, and motivation coaching – ADHD Coaching helps with both compensatory supports and long term skill development.
